Thomas L Shafer AIA

Thomas Shafer received his Master of Architecture ‘with Distinction’ from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design in 1985. While at Harvard, Shafer was a teaching assistant for Professor Jorge Silvetti, worked in the offices of Fred Koetter & Associates and Silvetti + Machado, and was an instructor at the Boston Architectural Center. Upon graduation, Shafer was selected to be an instructor for Harvard’s Graduate School of Design’s intensive six-week summer Career Discovery Program, and having been awarded the Appleton Traveling Fellowship (for academic excellence) Shafer embarked on a six-month sabbatical to Scandinavia as well as greater Western Europe, the purpose of which was to study the theory and buildings of master architect Alvar Aalto. In addition, Shafer spent much of his time visiting and documenting the works and projects of LeCorbusier for an anticipated publication. Previously, Shafer attended Washington University in St. Louis and graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Architecture. As an undergraduate, Shafer was a Luce Scholar finalist, a Rhodes Scholar nominee, a finalist for the School of Architecture’s Widman Prize based on excellence and outstanding achievement, and published numerous projects in the school’s archives.
